In 1942 the von Trapps vacationed in Stowe, Vermont, a village in the Green Mountains. Nearby was Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest mountain. Once again the family hiked, and views everywhere reminded them of Austria. They chose Stowe for their permanent American home.

They found a farm overlooking mountain ranges and valleys. The view was gorgeous, but the house was small and in poor condition. Mother said: “We can build a house, but we can’t build a view.” They bought the farm. Part of the old house collapsed in a storm. The family rebuilt much of the house themselves. When it was done, it looked like an Austrian house with flower boxes on the balconies.

Between tours, the family worked on the farm. Everyone had special duties caring for the house, the farm animals, gardens, orchards, and fields. “We were like a pioneer family,” said Rosmarie.

N is for the New Home, a shabby farmhouse, yes, true.

But the family bought it, not for the house but for the beautiful mountain view.
